oh how I have reviled Hollywood and secular humanism on this site.
but, who could ever take down icons like Tom Cruise? And movies like, for instance, Casablanca?
i saw yesterday as I was thinking about Top Gun–after watching a documentary about Tom Cruise’s career in film and bringing it up over lunch at the IHop–that film in America is our answer to being lost in this wild and brutal land over what we keft out ancestral countries over.
case in point: we are looking outwards and upwards to the night skies and seeing ET and other visions of what could be out there.
i made the point that the movie business caters to whatever people will pay to see and had to back off of that with my father’s help. Nobody wants to piss off Tom Cruise.
The film industry kept our hearts, minds and souls aiive in the WW and post WW eras. My father was such a fan of black and white films as a kid in working class England in the late 30’s and early 40’s and wanted to come to America to find that energy. He found a beautiful, aristioratic English wife and whisked her away here. But it didnt go as he thought it would. He just kept watching those movies. Fred Estaire and the like. As if it was real somehow. Then his kids started to fail.
For me it was books. I freaked out over movies because I lived in a world without leg strength, broken pud, legs atrophying from sitting/laying around with my nose in a book.
when I met Alex I had been at the state hospital where some one ripped me out of a book and plugged me into real life around me. With Alex I watched movies and got acquainted with a more typical reality based orientation. Movies like Midnight Cowboy. Glengary Glen Ross. The Zero Effect. Popular movies, critically acclaimed movies, classic movies; pertinent movies like “Green Card” and “Children of a Lesser God.” Gazillions of movies. At home in the evening on the VCR. “Jacob’s Ladder.”
then at the house in Semonole, FL I picked up the NLT New Believer’s Bible and read on a plan for six years and lost interest in all that.
now i have a religious core but I may be on the cusp of swinging back a bit to see life a little less sensitively. I was so lost over THREE ABORTIONS.
it took a lifetime to heal. Some things will never be funny. But I do see to say that not all Hollywood is in error.
It IS at the heart of what hearkens people to America world and within.
