Checkers

So, I put forth in my last post thay we worked on putting a Black person in office for three decades.

I have to reflect further on that. As I see it, that started with the assasination of JFK and then Martin Luther King, Jr.  Richard Nixon’s dog, Checkers, represented the currency and importance of the issue of Black and White in America at that time.

I see that it does go back to World War II. It was so impossibly ugly what was happening to Jewish women in concentration camps. Women starved to the bone were raped and then given abortions. Or the babies were born and then tortured. I am crying to think of it but I do see that it reflected the horrific fate of Africans in America at that time.

They were in the infancy of emancipation. I remember studying the work of the poets of the Harlem Rennaisance, in high school, such as Langston Hughes. That was in the 1920’s. So beautiful. It reminds me of the Cat Stevens son, “Morning Has Broken”: ”Blackbird hhas spoken, like the first bird…” Meanwhile, we also watched footage of Jews in the concentration camps. Starved, naked bodies thrown into mass graves. This was so disturbing to me. I am a Jew by matrilineal descent as well as a Christian. i didn’t know it at the time. The connection between Blacks and Jews has often been noted and is obvious.
